HIV and HCV Coinfection 541 18. HIV and HBV/HCV Coinfections
نویسندگان
چکیده
As HCV is ten times more infectious than HIV on blood-to-blood contact, intravenous drug users and recipients of blood products are particularly susceptible to coinfection. For example, on routine testing of blood products from HIV-infected hemophiliacs treated before the discovery of HCV in the early nineties, HCV antibodies and HCV RNA were detected in the serum of over 90 % of patients. The probability of transmission from needlestick injuries after exposure to HCVcontaminated blood is 2–8 %, compared to only 0.3 % after exposure to HIVcontaminated blood.

BACKGROUND Despite declines in mortality and morbidity rates of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection as the result of highly active antiretroviral therapy, liver diseases due to chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are a leading cause of death among HIV-infected patients. However, HIV and HBV or HCV coinfection is still poorly documented, ...
متن کاملHigh Prevalence and High Incidence of Coinfection with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis and Low Rate of Effective Vaccination against Hepatitis B in HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men with Known Date of HIV Seroconversion in Germany
OBJECTIVES Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at higher risk for coinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and syphilis than the general population. HIV infection and these coinfections accelerate disease progression reciprocally. This study evaluated the prevalence and incidence of these coinfections in HIV1-positive MSM in Germany. MATERIALS AND METHODS As part of ...
